In January 2004, the North Park Street Gallery
entered its final phase of utility box painting. Throughout North Park
more utility boxes were transformed into works of art by local artists.
Artists came and painted the boxes in wide variety of styles and themes.
This phase of the North Park Street
Gallery will continue until all of the utility boxes in North Park are
changed into artwork. Already dozens of boxes have been painted by local
artists and there are many more still to be painted.
North Park Main Street is presently
accepting designs for a utility box art project. All interested artists
are encouraged to submit a design. All designs are judged by a panel of
jurors.
The North Park Street gallery began in
2001 and was organized by UCSD intern Julie Edelman. Funds were generously
provided by a grant from the San Diego Foundation which was able to pay
for the paints and supplies. The North Park Street Gallery began in the
heart of North Park and has since moved outwards.
