July 2005 – Richard (Rick) Kurylo,
North Park Main Street’s Assistant Director of eight years, moves on
to his new job at the Business Improvement
District (BID) Council on July 1. Over the last eight years Rick
was instrumental in transforming North Park Main Street from a small
business improvement association to national leader in downtown
revitalization.
Assuming Rick’s position will be
Robert (Rob) Powell. Rob is a specialist in urban and regional
planning, economics, and historic preservation. Most recently he
has assisted the
North Park
Community Association through research and administration
towards the certification of the Dryden Historic District.
The search for North Park Main
Street’s new Assistant Director began in January 2005. A Search
Committee was formed that reviewed 16 applicants for the Assistant
Director Position. After an intense screening process and several
interviews the Search Committee finally selected Robert Powell as
the successor to Rick.
Rob is very excited to begin his work
at North Park Main Street, and Rick is enthusiastic to start at the
BID Council.
“The great part is that I will still
get to work with North Park, in addition to all the other BIDs in
San Diego,” Rick says. His new duties at the BID Council will
require him to be put in charge of business assistance programs
citywide.
The responsibilities of the Assistant
Director include grant writing, managing the North Park Main Street
office, assisting with the Spring Festival, managing finances, and
coordinating numerous other projects.
This is part of a transition that is
occurring in North Park Main Street. In September 2005 North Park
Main Street’s Executive Director Jay Turner will be retiring at age
65.
“It’s been a long time coming for
me,” says Jay, “I have done downtown revitalization up and down the
coast of California since 1988.” Jay began his career of downtown
revitalization in Fort Bragg, and then moved onto Eureka, before
coming to North Park. In all three communities Jay led a campaign
of revitalization based on nurturing arts, culture, and
entertainment.
In all three communities this had
proven very successful.
A search committee will begin
reviewing applicants for the position of Executive Director in late
July. |
