North Park Main Street
World Wide Web

North Park Main Street is
partially funded by the City of
San Diego Redevelopment Agency and the City of San Diego Small Business Enhancement Program

The North Park Theatre, part of the North Park Redevelopment Project Area and downtown North Park, is now being rehabilitated by a partnership between developer Arnold "Bud" Fischer, Lyric Opera San Diego & other not-for-profit arts organizations, and the City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency.  The North Park Theatre is located in the heart of downtown North Park, on 29th Street and University Avenue.  Originally planned as a theater for vaudeville and motion pictures, the North Park Theatre retains the glamour of the early boom of North Park and is once again becoming an arts, culture, and entertainment center for San Diego.

The North Park Theatre was originally a single screen motion picture and vaudeville theater that accommodated approximately 1,200 seats, a fly-loft for live theater productions, orchestra pit, projection room, and built-in pipe organ.  The North Park Theatre was once the most profitable theater in the Fox West Coast movie theater chain.  The Theatre is designed in the Italian Renaissance Style.  Its facade is a registered state and local historic land mark.

On May 21, 2004 the revitalization of the North Park Theatre broke ground at a public ceremony held by the old entrance to the theatre.  Click here for the full story on the North Park Theatre groundbreaking.  This event was hosted by Councilmember Toni Atkins and was attended by donors, city officials, and community members.

The rehabilitation of the North Park Theatre has been a major step in maintaining North Park as an arts, culture, and entertainment district in the heart of San Diego.  This project is one of many in North Park that are all part of a holistic strategy to create a lasting vitality in North Park.  The North Park Theatre reopened in October 2005; for information and show times visit www.lyricoperasandiego.com.

Renderings of the North Park Theatre have been shared with us by Bundy & Thompson, the architects redesigning the Theatre.  To view them please click on the links below.  These are all PDF files and require Adobe Acrobat Reader.  These are all large files and will take some time to load.
